Hello Voyager

Dior’s Collaboration with the Artisans of India

Hello Voyagers! I’m sorry it has been so quiet around here – despite all my good intentions, I fell out of the habit of posting my interesting textile links on the journal. Of course, if you are signed up for the newsletter, you haven’t missed anything, (The newsletter is the best way to stay up to date with us – you can sign up here). Anyway, I have had some requests to post this week’s newsletter, so here you go…

I have to admit, I had a whole other email put together to share with you. As always, I found interesting textile tidbits that I thought would spark some inspiration for your weekend. But then, I ran across a video that documents the making of Dior’s Fall/Winter 2023 collection, which was a collaboration with artisans from India. It is so spectacular, I just had to share it with you.

The video features many different artisans as they create the cloth and surface designs for the final garments – everything from beadwork and block printing to recreating a vintage fabric design with a handloom. It is a celebration of the astounding craftsmanship that goes into a couture collection. Watch the video below, and be sure to check out the other two Dior-adjacent links.

Also, I know everyone is eager to hear about the 2024 textile tour lineup. I am working on dates right now and will have more information for you soon.

Cheers,
Betsy B

Make yourself a cup of tea and sit down for some artisan-craft inspiration as you watch The Making Of Dior Fall 2023 in India. Oh, and if you aren’t a master of many languages, you might want to put on the closed captioning. Let me know if you enjoy it as much as I did, and which of the crafts really caught your eye!

As noted in the video, Dior works with the Chanakya School of Craft in Mumbai, where women can learn the art of hand embroidery. Learn more about the school here. Also, they have an exhibition space! Should we go? Should I be putting together a trip to India?
